How much time we spend eating? And how much time we spend choosing and knowing what we are eating? Used to the big shopping malls, with the shelfs full of uncountable choices, ready-to-serve and pre-cooked options,… but are we really aware of all that they contain? Where that food has been made, or how it has arrived there? Most of us, we know little about our actual food lifecycle, and how it is affecting our health and wellbeing.
Personally, the fact of living alone by 18 years old provided me with a complete freedom when choosing my own meals, not much knowledge about cooking, and as still in college, not much money to invest in nutrition. The cheaper the better, and if it was already done, the best. Good thing though, i have never a huge fan of junk fries, sodas, chips,… My body didn’t see to approved them. So I passed by with canned food, frozen veggies, packaged treats,… without caring much.
Some years and some digestive malfunctions later, made me re-examinate how and what I ate. All that recent trend toward organic, natural, and sustainable food got me wonder why conventional food from the big supermarket wasn’t supposed to good enough. It turned out to be the top of an ice-berg, where most of the products offered to us contain harmful substances, and do not come from ‘clean hands’.
